Arrows
“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.” Psalm 127:3, 4 The verses I quoted above teach us that God gives us our children and then compares our children to arrows in the hand of a mighty man. A mighty man has a sure aim and as such is effective against the enemy. This comparison teaches us that we must also determine to aim our children (or point them) in the right direction. “Train up a child in the way he should go ; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
Here are a couple of other points I would like to stress with regard to a mighty man and the “arrows” he aims.
1. A mighty man knows his target and then aims his arrows directly at the target to effectively defeat the enemy. We should aim our children to be Christ honoring Christians that are trying to reach and win the lost for Christ.
As we are aiming our children to live for the Lord, we should strive to defeat the enemy along the way. Our enemy is anything that keeps us from reaching our goal or that deters our children from God's will for their lives.
2. A mighty man knows when to let his arrows go. Too often we (especially moms) don’t want to let our children go. From the moment our children are born we should realize that God gave our children to us to be raised for His glory and to reach the next generation. We have to let them go a little at a time. Let them go in the nursery, to school, to youth activities, to college and eventually out on their own completely. This is not an easy task, but it must be done if your children are ever going to become responsible adults.
