You Don't Need Calgon!

“In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me. Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For thou art my hope, O Lord God; thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee. I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.” Psalm 71:1-7

Why would I use Scripture that starts out asking God not to let me put to confusion? As a mother, you may not wonder at all. I remember when I was a young mom with 4 children ages 5 and under...it was quite a time. I have so many wonderful memories of great times and precious moments with each of my children. I also remember having "adventures" in trying to survive each day.
I remember one day after having received a special plant as gift from a friend finding my 2 oldest sons (or should I call them fencers?) using plastic knives as swords to destroy my treasured plant! I remember another day in particular when the "natives" were restless and it seemed that no matter what I "promised" them, they would not settle down - they ended up knocking the VCR off the stand putting a hole in the wall of our brand new home! I recall countless times when I struggled to get the kids to obey resorting to calling my husband on the phone, and the kids would obey his voice over the phone more readily than mine (even with a swatting paddle in my hand!). Sometimes my days blurred into confusion as my plans changed from what I hoped to accomplish instead to following after my children and cleaning up the results of their curiosities.

As a Christian mother, people should be able to look to you and say that you are "as a wonder" to them; they should ask “How do you do it?” To keep any kind of real sanity, you have to put your trust in God. Do your child rearing His way. I like the verse that says “cause me to escape” you don’t need Calgon you need the Lord.

David (the writer of the Psalm) states that the Lord had been his trust from his youth. One day you will want your children to trust the Lord; not only for their Salvation, but for everything. You want them to trust that God’s way is right, and to use His Word as a guide for their lives. Teach your children that God held them up from your womb, and allowed them to be born. Teach them to praise God continually. To teach your children to turn to the Lord for their strength make sure that your children see that you trust the Lord.

Let your children see you read your Bible and pray. Pray with them and praise the Lord when He answers prayer. Remember on those days when life seems overwhelming (everyday, right?) to place yourself under the refuge of God’s strength. Trust in Him, He gave you the children; He will give the wherewithal to raise them for Him. When people ask you “how do you do it?” (I am as a wonder to many...vs. 7) say as David did “thou art my trust…” And as you do so, you will be teaching your children from their youth to put their trust in the Lord; so that one day they might say as did David “O God, thou hast taught me from my youth; and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.”

I am thankful for the comfort this verse gave to me and continues to supply. I may not be facing the hectic days of raising 4 young children, but throughout our lives we will face circumstances that we wish to escape...during those times resort to the Lord our Strong Habitation! By so doing you too will be "as a wonder to many." May the Lord bless you. Have a wonderful day!
